This article, provided by Jumpstart, discusses the issues surrounding America’s early literacy gap. Different chapters touch on: 1. starting behind and staying behind in early childhood literacy; 2. low-income communities and the lack of book accessibility; and 3. the benefits of early intervention. This article focuses on the fact that early cognitive development is essential, and reading is the key to early literacy. Jumpstart is a non-profit organization working to narrow the early childhood literacy gap in low-income neighborhoods, as well as more affluent communities in America. Jumpstart’s goal is that, one day, every child in America will enter school prepared to succeed.
